“They just carried her out in her hands and you can tell above her chest area she had a hole where she was shot,” neighbor Justin Latoutrrette told WSVN.

Judge Sentences Rapist To 252 Years In Prison

Tears rolled down his face the minute he was locked up in the police cells. This time he knew it was for life.
No more would Shepherd Moyo be allowed to terrorise northern Joburg residents. On Wednesday, the Lonehill and Paulshof robber and rapist was sentenced by the Johannesburg High Court to multiple life terms.

Investigating officer Tony Rakoma had a triumphant smile on his face. His job was finally done. None of the witnesses who testified came to court for the sentencing, but Rakoma had sent them text messages about the verdict.
“They were all so happy and relieved. They finally got their closure and can now move on with their lives. It was a job well done,” he said.
Moyo, who was nicknamed “Axeman”, would rob his victims in the early hours – usually between 2am and 4am. After ransacking their houses, he would have some water and would either lock the occupants in their bathrooms or bedrooms.
In some instances, he would rape the victims. Most of the items he would take from the homes were valued at thousands of rand. His crime spree dates back to 2004, with incidents also in 2008, 2010 and 2011.
“The worst in my view is that he attacked and raped the victims in the sanctity of their own homes where they thought they were safe,” said Judge Mathilda Masipa in sentencing him.
She was especially aggrieved by the fact that Moyo would not only force himself on them, but would also strip them of their dignity and ensure the rapes were not traced back to him.
In one of the rapes, he used a condom and flushed it down the toilet. In another, he ejaculated on the carpet and wiped himself with a towel, which he got rid of.
Judge Masipa said his three rape victims never recovered from the trauma and became emotional wrecks. She firmly believed all the offences were carefully planned and executed. The judge said it was inconceivable that someone who was working alone would pick the victims out at random, and she was convinced he had studied the potential victims.
Moyo would always take his time during the robberies and never hurry, as if he knew no one would come to the rescue of the victims.
“His brazen conduct sent a chilly message to residents that no degree of security would deter criminals,” said Judge Masipa.
The 63-year-old man he repeatedly stabbed during a robbery now lives as a prisoner in his own home.
“What weighs with me very heavily is that the accused showed no remorse, therefore it is difficult to imagine he can be rehabilitated.”
The judge said it was clear from the evidence that Moyo was a detriment to society.
Last week, she found him guilty on 11 counts of housebreaking and robbery, three of rape and one of attempted murder. Six robbery charges were withdrawn as witnesses could not be traced. On Wednesday, Moyo got 15 years for each of the 11 counts of robbery, 12 years for attempted murder, and life sentences for all three rape charges – a total of 252 years.
The attempted murder and robbery sentences will run concurrently with the three life sentences. “The effective sentence therefore is life imprisonment,” the judge said.

“I know Why Actors Are Dying In Nollywood” – Prophet Chris Okafor

Prophet Chris Okafor is the General Overseer of Mountain of Liberation and Miracle Ministry. Below is what he told an Encomium magazine reporter about the recent deaths in Nollywood
“This year I gave a prophecy concerning the entertainment industry that there is going to be series of death, and they never asked me for a solution. One problem is that they like to go to churches where they do paparazzi and the rest. They don’t want to come to the truth and that is why they are dying this way. If they come to me, I will tell them the mystery why people are dying in Nollywood just like I’ve been able to tell Nigerians why electricity can’t be stable in Nigeria. I know why they are dying. Let them come to me”

Obama To Visits Nigeria On May 28

At last the President of the United States, Barack Obama, would visit Nigeria on 28 May, 2013,  as part of a three-nation tour of Africa, ending speculation of the Obama scorn with the flawed elections in 2007 that brought Umaru Yar’Adua to the Presidency.

Seen as long overdue but coming at a time when security is the number one item on the country’s agenda, the 44th President of the United States is expected to parley with President Jonathan on how to tackle the niggling problems of insecurity, the economy and trade relations between both nations. President Obama would be interested in hearing President’s Jonathan’s plan to control the Boko Haram insurgents who he plans to offered amnesty, even as the sect continues to slay hundreds in their quest to end western education in the country apart from kidnapping foreigners for ransom.  The growing bases of Al Quaeda, a long term enemy of America and its allies, along the Lake Chad region resulting from their recent dislodgement from Mali may find space on their agenda.

Both men are likely to contemplate the resurgence of Niger Delta militancy, which had simmered with the granting of amnesty by former President Yar’Adua. On the political side, they may weigh the propriety of a Jonathan candidacy in 2015 and the implications for democracy not only for Nigeria, but also for the African continent as well as the implication of good governance as exemplified by Nigeria for the stability of the sub-region. It is speculated that both presidents would broach issues on economic co-operation not least the upbeat forecasts of the emergence of Nigeria as an economic force, what with the country’s latitude for growth. America would be interested in a partnership that would engender a favourable outcome for both countries whose bilateral trade hit $5 trillion in the first quarter of 2012.

It would be an opportunity for President Jonathan to engage Obama on the US exploitation of Shale gas projected to cut a quarter US imports of Nigeria’s oil by the end of the year. They could discuss how Nigeria can benefit from alternative energy programme of the United States. It would give President Jonathan a chance to see how the AGOA programme can be improved to favour Nigeria’s businesses, especially the SMEs. Obama’s planned session with businessmen while in the country assures that there is yet scope for improving business and trade relations between both countries. Obama’s visit is believed to be five years late given that he was billed to have visited the country in his first term in office, especially when he visited other African countries, including Ghana, which is only 30 minutes away from Nigeria by flight.

Of that snob, Nobel Literature Prize winner, Professor Wole Soyinka, said, “If Obama decides to grace Nigeria with his presence, I will stone him. The message he is sending by going to Ghana is so obvious, is so brilliant that he must not render it flawed by coming to Nigeria any time soon.”

55 Nigerians Killed, 105 Prisoners Freed In Boko Haram Attack

As many as 55 people were killed and 105 prisoners freed in coordinated attacks by the militant group Boko Haram targeting security points in Nigeria's north-east on Tuesday.

Reports quoting the military and witnesses said the militants burned Army barracks, a prison and police post and government buildings in the pre-dawn raid in the tiny remote town of Bama in Borno state.

Military spokesman Musa Sagir told news agencies that around 200 heavily armed militants, who came in buses and pick-up trucks, launched the attack at about 05:00 a.m. local time.
The gunmen broke into the prison after their attack on the military barracks and the police station were repelled. Thirteen militants, some of them disguised as Army personnel, were killed in the five-hour shootout between them and security forces.
Casualties included 22 police officers, 14 prison wardens, two soldiers and four civilians.

Extremist attacks are common in the Boko Haram base, but the scale of bloodshed makes it one of the deadliest strikes since a 2009 uprising by the rebels.
In an effort to stem the violence that threatens stability in Africa's top energy producer, President Goodluck Jonathan had set up a committee to work out modalities of an amnesty to the militants, as well as to open talks with Boko Haram, but its leader Abubakar Shekau rejected it.
Boko Haram, based in Northern Nigeria, wants to carve out an Islamic state in Nigeria's predominantly Muslim north. The radical sect also campaigns aggressively against Western education, which it considers anti-Islamic. More than 3,500 people are believed to have been killed since the terror outfit began its campaign of violence four years ago.

Satellite Images Show 2,275 Burnt Houses In Baga – HRW

Rights Watch, on Wednesday described as hogwash, military’s claim that the fires that razed thousands of buildings in Baga, Borno State were caused by rocket-propelled grenades  fired by members of the Islamist militant group, Boko Haram.

HRW,  in a statement on its website, said satellite images showed that soldiers may have  set the fires that razed  down  “2,275 buildings  and left 125 others”  in the town  severely damaged.
Calling on the Federal Government to impartially probe the incident,   it said that the military was covering up something  going by the fact that it had vehemently refused to allow journalists access into the troubled community.
There had been reports that 187 persons were killed and about 2,000 houses torched during the April 16, 2013 clash.
President Goodluck Jonathan had last week directed the Defence Headquarters and the National Emergency Management Agency to investigate the incident.  Both organisations submitted their preliminary reports to the President on Monday.
According to a statement by the Special Adviser to the President (Media and Publicity), Dr. Reuben Abati,  DHQ’s   findings showed that 30 terrorists were killed during the crisis. It also said that six bodies were recovered in Lake Chad about three kilometres  from the action spot.
In its report, NEMA stated that a number of buildings and business premises were destroyed in Baga. It claimed that the total number of houses in the community was far less than 1,000.
But the HRW, in the   statement by its Africa Director, Daniel Bekele, said that the area damaged by fires measured about 80,000 sq2.
Stating that the fires were detected by the MODIS sensor aboard NASA satellites Aqua and Terra, the rights organisation said its findings corroborated claims by the residents that 2,000 houses and 183 bodies were burnt  during the mayhem.
The group said, “Because of the number of buildings destroyed as well as their distribution across large sections of the town, we believe that such fires were intentionally set and not inadvertently sparked by the detonation of rocket-propelled grenades or improvised explosive devices.
“Such weapons could not ignite fires on such a wide scale, nor could they set fires to non-attached structures. Small arms and light weapons do not contain the amount of explosive or incendiary material to produce such a scale of damage.”
“Baga residents told HRW that soldiers ransacked their town after the Boko Haram militant Islamist group attacked a military patrol, killing a soldier. Community leaders said that immediately after the attack they counted 2,000 burned homes and 183 bodies. Satellite images of the town analysed by HRW corroborate these accounts and identify 2,275 destroyed buildings, the vast majority likely residences, with another 125 severely damaged.”
The group stated that the damage was widely distributed across the southern half of Baga, with multiple clusters of near total building destruction measuring approximately eight hectares in total area.
It said, “Virtually all identified buildings damaged exhibit signatures fully consistent with fire, including the presence of burn scars, destroyed trees as well as intact load-bearing walls without a roof. Further, damage matches the spatial extent of satellite-detected active fire zones recorded on the night of April 16 and the afternoon of April 17, 2013 strongly suggesting identified buildings damage occurred during this period.
“It is likely that a small percentage of destroyed or severely damaged buildings have not been identified because of tree cover;Total buildings damaged are therefore likely to be higher.”
The HRW said  that the discrepancies between the facts on the ground and statements by the  military  raised concerns of cover-up of abuses by troops.
The group added,  “Since the attack, the military has restricted journalists’ access to Baga, a remote fishing community on the shores of Lake Chad, 200 kilometres northeast of the city of Maiduguri.
“Boko Haram has destroyed mobile telephone towers in the area, claiming that security services used mobile phones to track down its members, making communication particularly difficult for survivors of the attack.
“The Nigerian military has a duty to protect itself and the population from Boko Haram attacks, but the evidence indicates that it engaged more in destruction than in protection.”
When contacted, the   Director of Defence Information, Brig.-Gen Chris Olukolade, said that the claims by the HRW were unfair and untrue.
Olukolade said that a group of foreign jornalists who requested the JTF to escort them to Baga got positive response.
He said that the foreign journalists could not go to Baga because they were scared of plying the road leading to Baga due to the activities of Boko Haram.
He added  that it was a surprise that the  HRW  could turn round to accuse the military of blocking access to Baga.
Olukolade said, “First of all, I want to say that we stand by the report of the DHQ to the President until it is reasonably and fairly proved otherwise.
“On the allegation by the HRW, I think it is an unfair comment on their part.  As I am talking to you, a number of foreign journalists who came into the country requested to be escorted there and the JTF escorted them there.  We are suprised that they are turning round to accuse us.
“Did anybody stop them from going there? Why did they not excercise their freedom of movement if they were comfortable with the activities of the Boko Haram?
NEMA’s Press Officer,    Ezekiel Manzo, told our correspondent on the telephone that he could not confirm the exact number of destroyed houses identified by a NEMA team that visited Baga.
He said  that the   team was still in the   town trying to  assist  the displaced residents.
Manzo said, “Our team is still in Baga town where they are setting up camp to cater for the displaced residents; you know we are concerned about the welfare of the displaced people.
“I don’t have the number of houses destroyed during the incident, but I will get the figure when I resume work tomorrow (Today).”

Nigerian Arrested Over Acid Attack On Another Nigerian in London

After a young Nigerian woman, Naomi Oni’s face was left severely scarred by acid thrown on her in east London in December, police have charged another Nigerian woman, Mary Konye, over the incident.
Naomi Oni, 21, was partially blinded and needed skin grafts after acid was thrown on her by a person wearing a veil after the Victoria’s Secret shop assistant got off a bus on Lodge Avenue in Dagenham, east London in the early hours of December 30.

Mary Konye, a Nigerian also 21, from Canning Town, east London, was last Friday charged with throwing or casting a corrosive fluid with intent to burn, maim, disfigure, disable or do grievous bodily harm at Oni.
Konye will appear in custody at Redbridge Magistrates’ Court today. Police had previously arrested a 28-year-old male but he was released without any further action.
Naomi suffered horrific burns to her face, leg, arm and head and was left partially blind after a person dressed in a niqab threw acid over her as she returned to her home in Dagenham, following a shift at the Victoria’s Secret store in the Westfield Shopping Centre in Stratford.
She also lost her hair and eyelashes in the incident and had undergone several operations since.
Doctors had feared that she would be permanently blinded, but after intensive treatment at a specialist burns unit, she recovered sight in her left eye and partial sight in her right eye.

DELSU Student Hacks Into Uduaghan’s Phone

A 400-level medical student of Delta State University, DELSU, Abraka, in Delta State, has been arrested by the police for allegedly hacking into Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan’s phone.
The student, who failed in pharmacology and pathology course  sent a text message, purportedly from the governor, to the Vice Chancellor, Prof Eric Arubayi, requesting him to upgrade his scores.
Gov Uduaghan

Media gathered that enraged Govenor Uduaghan asked the vice chancellor to report the matter to the police and ensure the student was arrested when the matter was brought to his knowledge, as he never sent such message.
The affected student in a statement to the police, however, denied the allegation.
Investigation by Media showed that the matter was causing ripples in the university, as the university authorities, apparently responding to the request, upgraded the score of the student in pharmacology.
DELSU Student Hacks Into Uduaghan’s Phone
The poser by concerned stakeholders is: Assuming, but not conceding that the text message emanated from the governor, should the vice chancellor have altered the scores of a student that failed his  examination?”
This is, however, not the first time the governor’s phone had been hacked into by fraudsters. They had hacked into his Airtel and MTN phone numbers in the past as well as his email address.
The first text message to the vice chancellor on July 24 reads: “My able VC, Chief Tony Anenih called me in respect of one boy that just wrote pathology and pharmacology exam in 400 level Medicine. My able Prof, I want you to ensure that boy passes, you know I cannot afford to disappoint Chief Tony Anenih. Am in a meeting. These are the details. CHS/04/05/88406.”
Thinking that the text message was actually from the governor, as it came from the number with which he saved the governor’s name,  Uduaghan 1 in his phone, Prof Arubayi replied, asking for the student’s name to which the hacker replied: “His name is Imala W. Kelly. My able VC,  all I want is the boy to pass. Chief Tony Anenih has been calling.”
DELSU vice chancellor, Prof Arubayi, confirmed to Vanguard in his office, Monday, that he, in fact,  received the said text message and contacted the governor after  the scores of students who scored between 48-49 in pharmacology was upgraded to 50 based on standing regulation of the university, “but he denied ever sending me such a text message.”
He said the Academic Board of the College of Health Sciences had met and approved the scores in pathology, which the student scored 46, and there was nothing that could be done about it, other than for the affected person to go for a resit, adding: “That is what I advised the governor.”
Prof Arubayi told Vanguard that it was the Provost of the College of Sciences, Dr. John Ohaju-Obodo, that drew his attention about a week after that a text message, purportedly from the governor, appointing him chairman of a juicy government  committee was received by him, but when he contacted the governor, he told him it was a scam.
He said he wasted no time when he confirmed the truth from the governor in summoning the student and handing him over to the police for cyber crime.
“I am even surprised that the police have not charged him to court, as far as I am concerned, this is an EFCC case,” he said.
He said the student was currently facing a disciplinary panel for breach of matriculation oath, but lamented that he had not appeared before the panel.
A university source said the student had been suspended, but as at Monday, he was seen attending lectures and had refused to vacate his room despite orders to that effect from the authorities.
Prof Arubayi laughed when told by Vanguard that he was being accused of examination malpractice, saying, “Did the student give me money to change his scores or is he a girl to say that she is my girlfriend, what was done was based on the regulation of the school,”
Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof Chukwuemeka Peter Aloamaka and provost, Dr Ohaju –Obodo  told Vanguard that no unilateral decision was taken by the vice chancellor, as the appropriate organ looked into the matter before upgrading the scores of five to six students based on the institution’s regulation.

Breaking: Pastor Provides Guns For Our Operations – Kidnap suspects

Solomon Eze, a 30-year-old pastor, who is currently cooling off at the dreaded cell of the special anti-robbery squad, SARS, Ikeja, Lagos over an alleged case of armed robbery and kidnapping is finding it difficult to maintain his innocence.
The Abia State-born suspect, who was arrested with an Ak 47 rifle, told Crime Alert that he is a deliverance minister at The Bride Assembly, a Church located at Ijesha area of the State. He explained further that the rifle found in his possession belongs to a friend he met at Ikire prayer mountain in Osun State.
However, police sources intimated Crime Alert  that Eze  was arrested during investigations into the gruesome murder of a police corporal,  Iweka Ramat, at kirikiri area of Lagos State.   Sources said Eze and one of his colleagues were accosted inside a taxi cab by a police patrol team at Berger axis of kirikiri Town in February 2013 and while the police attempted to search them, they bolted out of the cab and the policemen went after them.  The police officer, Ramat, who went after Eze was later found dead in an isolated part of the area after a deafening sound of gunfire was heard.
The suspects

The taxi driver was taken into custody and later transferred to the SARS where he was interrogated.    It was gathered at that point that Eze contacted   the taxi driver on the phone before he picked them.  “We retrieved the phone number from the taxi driver and we contacted the network provider who furnished us with Eze’s home address.   On April 4, 2013 the officer in charge of SARS, Sp Abba Kyari led a team of crack operatives to Eze’ s apartment at No.113, Idowu Street, Olodi Apapa, Lagos, around 2 am in the morning where they apprehended him.
He later took the operatives to an apartment in Ikorodu area of the state where they recovered an Ak 47 rifle with number 6090. When we interrogated him further, Eze led us to arrest six other members of his gang identified as Sunday James, 29; Emmanuel Iloakazi, 26; Ikechukwu Okafor aka Osuofia I, 37; Obinna Egbugha, 26; Ikechukwu Chedom, and Christian Ezinkwo aka Alhaji, 3, while two additional AK47 rifles, 11 Ak47 magazines  loaded with 30 rounds of live ammunition, were recovered from them,”the source added.
When Crime Alert spoke with Eze who hails from Osisioma village, Abia State,  he said the AK 47 rifle belongs to his friend Uchenna.   According to him   “On October 15, 2012, I met a brother, Uchenna where I used to pray for people – Mountain of Mercy, Ikoyi, Osun State. After three days’ prayer, he started calling me. He asked me where I live and do prayer. I told him that I live in the Leadway Estate, Eruwe.

He later came with one Ogonna on January 2.   Ogonna collected my number and left. I did not see him for more than a month until I was about traveling to Anambra for a church programme.   I left them in Ikorodu and travelled to Anambra.   I was there when my brother, Kingsley called me that the police had arrested him because of me. I was arrested and brought to SARS. Uchenna told me that his brother used to bring cars from abroad and asked me to follow him to bring them. We went and brought a Toyota Camry car. He gave me N30, 000.
“I only prayed for Uchenna before my encounter with them. I am married. My wife sells fruits and she is carrying a seven-month pregnancy. It was James that put me into trouble because I arrested him. I did not participate in four armed robbery and kidnap operations as he is claiming. I don’t even know that I was arrested for belonging to a robbery/kidnapping gang. It is a surprise to me because I have never been involved in this type of case.”
Sunday James who is the second in command to the gang said “ I am from Ebonyi State but I live in Coker, Orile, Lagos. I was introduced to the gang by Victor Emmanuel, who is the leader of the gang.
In January, Emmanuel rented an apartment in Ajah area and in February, we started the business fully. Whenever we kidnap, we take the victim to the apartment. We have kidnapped four people so far.
“The first person we kidnapped paid N1m ransom and my share was N100,000. Emmanuel received N200,000 since he was the leader. The second victim paid N1m and we shared the money in the same manner.”  The suspect however added that they later increased their ransoms for subsequent operations. “We later started demanding N2m as ransom.
After our last operation, we bought a jeep for N1.5m and the remaining money was shared equally. I got N70,000 and that was the last time I saw the gang,” he said.    The suspect said the gang was much organized as every member had his own role to play.
The sealed storey-building
The sealed storey-building
According to him, a gang member had a duty of feeding and looking after victims while in captivity. He said, “Emmanuel was the one responsible for spotting people that we will kidnap. He was the one who usually contacted the families of victims and he also collected the ransom.“Pastor’s job is to provide the guns that the gang will use. I only follow the gang but I don’t carry guns.”
Kidnap of a prominent person
When asked how the gang usually picked its victims, the suspect said anyone seen in a flashy car was a potential victim.  He said, “Emmanuel usually sits on the passenger side and anytime he spots someone in a flashy car, we trail the person and then grab him or her.  We then dump the victim’s vehicle somewhere before contacting the family. We have never kidnapped a prominent person.”
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Umar Manko, told newsmen  while parading the suspects that,  “ in our efforts to rid the state of kidnapping, we were able to identify two groups of kidnappers, we have been able to uproot one group and we believe that the other group is responsible for the kidnap of the LCDA boss. We also sealed off two of the kidnapper’s dens located at Ikorodu and Ibeju-Lekki and a storey-building belonging to one of the kidnappers located at Ajangbadi area of Lagos.

Three persons, including two lovers, Godstime Bisa and Fine Boson, aged 26 and 15 years respectively, were Monday night, allegedly burnt to death at Egbemene community, Warri Corner, Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State in a suspected adulterated kerosene  blast.

Media Nigeria was informed that the explosion, which affected five persons, occurred when one of them, who were inside a room, tried to refill an already lit lantern.
According to a source, “unfortunately, only the two lovers, who hail from Ekogbene community in Burutu Local Government Area lost their lives,” our source hinted.
“Property worth millions of naira were damaged in the ensuring inferno, which happened at about 11.30 pm. The deceased persons were rushed to the Central Hospital, Warri, but they died all the same.”
Speaking to Media Nigeria on the incident, Tuesday, coordinator of the Ijaw People Development Initiative, IPDI, Comrade Austin Ozobo, said: “This is a mysterious death, no one expected the two lovers will die so cheaply.
“I have visited the community, the people are very curious to know how such a minor fire could claim two lives and left three seriously burnt. The Ijaw people are equally handicapped over the attitude of security operatives and government hospitals because they assume that any Ijaw person burnt by fire is an oil bunkerer or pipeline vandal.
“So they either inject the victim dead or call security men to arrest the victim. This shows that the life of Ijaw man has no value.”
His words, “Even now, we are still battling for a suitable place where the three survivors can be treated and one of them just died today (Tuesday). So, I call on the state government to come to the aid of the victims and their families.

Police Arrest Man Who Tried To Sell Grandson On Facebook

Indian authorities have arrested a 47-year-old man who tried to sell his newborn grandson to a local businessman.
The two men reached the deal on Facebook, and the grandfather was apparently helped by two hospital employees who contacted the buyer and arranged the deal. They even agreed on a price, 45,000 rupees (roughly $830), but Indian cops swooped down and arrested the lot, reports news.co.au.
"All three people who conspired to sell the child have been arrested and we will be interrogating the businessman who paid the money to buy the baby," said Satish Malhotra, a senior police officer in Ludhiana.
The baby has since been returned to her mother, who filed a complaint against her father. She also bought him a T-shit, inscribed “World’s Worst Grandfather, runner up” in Hindi, we were not told.
The three suspects have been charged with kidnapping and they could face up to seven years in prison if found guilty. The same cannot be said of the buyer, but then again Indian justice works much like justice in the west – rich people who can afford good representation can get out of anything.
